D’Acqua Ristorante’s Chef Enzo Offers Leaner Food Recommendations

The New Year usually motivates millions of people to set weight-loss goals. Making healthful food choices, and opting for selections that won’t pack on the pounds, can make all the difference, exclaims Enzo Febbraro, the co-owner and executive chef of D’Acqua Ristorante (www.dacquadc.com).

According to the National Institutes of Health, 66 percent of the U.S. adult population is overweight or obese that can lead to such conditions as diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, and arthritis, among other weight-related diseases.

“The food choices we make at every meal all add up to produce the final package – our body. If we consistently make good healthy choices, we will in result have healthy bodies,” says, Chef Enzo.

Here are some of his recommendations:

  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Produce is high in fiber and vitamins. They can help control weight and keep you feeling fuller for longer.
  • Whole. Stick with whole-grain foods when eating things like cereal, bread, or pasta. Whole grains have fiber, which can help lower cholesterol and help you feel full.
  • Eat lean protein sources. Try to avoid foods that contain trans or saturated fats that increase risks of heart disease, as well as other diseases. Trans fats are often found in packaged foods like cookies and crackers, while saturated fats come from animal products like meat and dairy. Lean protein choices would include chicken, fish, turkey, tofu, and beans.
  • Increase fiber by eating foods such as cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, and salad.
  • Reducing portion sizes. Eating from a smaller plate will give the illusion of more food, yet will reduce the calorie content.
  • Try something different, like a new soup, a veggie burger, or the salad of the day to break things up and find new lower calorie tasty foods. Also, opt for baking and broiling over frying to reduce fat and calories.
  • Skip the sauce. Look for sauces and soups that are not creamy.
Additionally, the American Heart Association recommends that people eat fish at least two times per week. “Seafood can be a good option for those looking to reach or maintain a healthy weight,” adds Chef Enzo. “Choices such as herring, trout and salmon are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids and are very heart-healthy. It’s a win-win situation. You get to eat great food and it’s good for you.”
